The following is a great scene in City Slickers…  Billy Crystal’s wife has sent him off to a dude ranch to find his smile again…Yeah I know it’s a movie so work with me a little bit.

Please be advised that the “S word” is used in the above clip…and I don’t mean Shoot.

Curly’s Secret to Life…

When I first attempted to articulate the meaning of personalized empowerment, I thought of this scene in City Slickers. (Thank goodness for YouTube!)  For Curly (Jack Palance) it was so simple but I just love how Billy Crystal is so confused.  He probably didn’t want to here that he has to figure it out for himself…

Recently I came up with the concept of personalized empowerment when I was not-so-gently pushed by a colleague to explain what I do.

I started out with… the typical, “I try to help people.”

OK, how.  “Well, I help them release what keeps them stuck so they can achieve their goals.” Referring to how the past influences and programs us to be who we are.

He told me to stop with the therapist babble and tell him what I do… I could feel the adrenalin kick in.

After some time of this back and forth and nitpicking my every word I finally said, “It comes down to  power.  You got the message along the way that you didn’t have any choice and now it’s time to be empowered to reject the message you’ve been given and write yourself a new one.  Why does anyone else get to decide but yourself?  I  want people to take their power back so they can experience peace and truly be whoever they want to become.   I want to empower them to achieve their goals and the idea that you can cookie cutter that one, one size fits all,  is ridiculous.”

And so was born “personalized empowerment”.  Let me know what you think.

Even if you don’t write it here, I bet we would truly get unique answers because what makes me happy and feeling like my life is productive and purposeful has got to be different than yours since we arrived here today with a different history and set of experiences.  Sure there may be some similarities with people but the process of arriving at the point of being empowered to make positive cognitive changes in your life is unique and to be a part of that process is not only a huge responsibility but also a great privilege.

We define who we are and what we are capable of accomplishing. Once we figure this out we become empowered. I really liked your post and your use of the video from “City Slickers”. It humanized the post and got your point across.

Too bad that “one thing” isn’t just a finger … I’d have figured it out LONG AGO! Okay, so I may be a bit slower than most, but thanks to your post, I now understand what Personalized Empowrment truly is ( although I still wish it were a finger ) … Now I’m off to find me “one thing”

It has been a long time since I’ve seen City Slickers. Thank you for the great clip between Jack Palance and Billy Crystal…and for the reminder, what is your one thing?

I still remember Jack Palance doing all of those one armed push-ups at the Oscars that year…great stuff.

Figuring out that one thing is the difficult part. Any suggestions on how to find it short of going on a cattle run? I don’t think I could do that one!

    Hi Jennifer,

I really like how you explain that your way of “helping people” includes genuinely HELPING them because using hypnosis puts them in the driving seat consciously in their lives. It’s like, we’re all driving a car (our lives) but we don’t even realize that so much of it is unconsciously driving. Decide to program our minds positively is an amazing thing to do! We can have what we want and get to actually go PURSUE that!

Personalized Empowerment – I think you nailed the perfect phrase to convey your meaning; I didn’t even need the rest of the post to understand what you meant, although I enjoyed it! Funny, actually, the movie that comes to mind as I think about that phrase is not City Slickers, but Pretty Woman. Julia Roberts talks about how when you hear something often enough, you start to believe it. I think then Richard Gere tries to say something nice, but Julia says, “The bad stuff is easier to believe.” It’s just true, isn’t it?

  18. I love the fact that we are all different and arrive at conclusions in a different manner. I know I am as thick as two short planks ,but can make correct conclusions correctly very quickly sometimes . Trying to keep your brain in tip top shape is a full time job, the more help , the better.

I have not seen that movie in quite some time…I have alwasy loved Jack…
